Driver and passengers cited for open intox after group runs red light

Four people are facing trouble after having a little too much fun Saturday night. Mount Pleasant Police pulled over a 44-year-old Vestaburg man for running a red light at 9:44 p.m. at the intersection between Broomfield and Tallgrass roads. After police looked looked in the vehicle they found open intoxicants. The driver and passengers, a 45-year-old female from Vestaburg, a 27-year-old male from Shepherd and a 21-year-old male from Edmore, were all cited for open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, while the driver also was charged a ticket for running the light.

Brooke Sihota, Paulina Lee Elected 2011 Team Captains

Seniors Brooke Sihota and Paulina Lee have been voted team captains for the 2011 Central Michigan field hockey team, head coach Cristy Freese announced Wednesday. "They are respected by everyone and can be looked up to on and off the field," Freese said. "From a coach's standpoint, we certainly feel they give the same message and that's what we look for in our captains."

Rock Allegiance Tour brings rock 'n' roll to Soaring Eagle in Mount Pleasant

A day after the Rock Allegiance Tour kicked off its two-month run, Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson was on the phone, setting the stage for its stop Friday to Mount Pleasant's Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. "It was off the hook," Nelson said of the Dallas opener. "We're co-headlining with Papa Roach, alternating who closes the show each night, so you get a full shot of us."

Midland's Connor Gagnon gets nod for Central Michigan University kickoffs

Former Midland High star Connor Gagnon was named the starting kicker Monday by Central Michigan University football coach. Gagnon will handle the kickoffs for the Chippewas when they open the season Thursday at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

CMU president to faculty: "Shame on you for not teaching"

"Shame on you for not teaching." Those are the words of Central Michigan University President George E. Ross to the faculty members who did not teach Monday morning in response to unresolved contract negotiations. Ross said in a Monday morning press conference he is extremely disappointed by the strike, called a work stoppage by the Faculty Association, taken on the first day of the fall semester. Despite meetings since April, the administration and 600-member faculty association have not been able to agree on money matters in a contract.

MAC Unveils 2011-12 Conference Schedules


The Mid-American Conference has released its league basketball schedules. The Central Michigan women open Jan. 5 at Northern Illinois while the men will host Toledo Jan. 7. The Chippewas will host just one double header this winter, Saturday, Jan. 28.

No work, all play: Mount Pleasant police crack down as CMU students arrive on campus

While Central Michigan University educators aren’t working, law enforcers had plenty of work this weekend, officials say. Mount Pleasant police officials say they enlisted the help of campus police and state police when cracking down on the university’s “Welcome Back Weekend,” which officials say “has caused significant public safety concerns” in the past. Mount Pleasant police records show, between Thursday and Sunday, the agencies reported 258 people were cited for possessing alcohol as a minor; 45 were cited for “loud parties;” 13 people were cited for attending or hosting a “nuisance party;” 14 fights were broken up by police; and three people were cited for malicious destruction of property.
