Man indicted by grand jury for failure to register as sex offender

Douglas Chuck Ritter, 43, of Mount Pleasant was indicted by a federal grand jury in Bay City for failure to register as a sex offender, U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced. The indictment charges that from April to August 2011, Ritter failed to register and update his registration as a sex offender after being convicted of a sex offense in the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Court after entering, leaving or residing on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Reservation in Isabella County.

Kaitlyn Schultz had a season high 21 kills, as she guided the Central Michigan volleyball team to a 3-2 victory, after trailing 0-2, in the team's first home game of the season. Following an Eagles' (13-4, 1-2) timeout in the fifth set, and the score 8-6 in favor of the Chippewas (8-6, 1-2), Val DeWeerd notched two kills making the lead 10-6. Lindsey Dulude added one of her 13 kills following an EMU point making the score 11-7. Schultz did the rest of work as she reeled off two more kills including the final dagger to give CMU a 15-9 set five win.

Michigan bands to rock Mount Pleasant during four-day festival

The music scene will be flooded with more than 20 bands from the Midwest as they come to Mount Pleasant for a weekend of local music. Midwest Fest, a four-day long festival, is in its fourth year and is organized by Corey Densmore, owner of Diamonds in the Rough Promotions. It begins tonight and ends Saturday night. “This year is similar to years past, where you can enjoy everyone coming, regardless of what you like,” Densmore said. “You might not know about the bands, but you’ll probably follow them after seeing them.” Each band is set to play at Rubble’s Bar, 112 W. Michigan St., and tickets cost $7 to $10 nightly and $20 to $25 for a pass for all events.

Mardi Gras in downtown Mount Pleasant aims to attract students this weekend

Jon Joslin has spent a lot of time in previous years decorating downtown Mount Pleasant in preparation for Mardi Gras, but this year Joslin took on a larger role. Joslin, chair of the Mardi Gras committee, is in charge of the entire set up for Mardi Gras this year, taking place Friday. “Mardi Gras is basically an opportunity for the community of Mount Pleasant to welcome Central Michigan students to the downtown community. There’s a wide variety of activities going on,” Joslin said. “The big event will be at 6 p.m. which is the parade with the Central Michigan University marching band. Once the parade is done, the CMU marching band comes back around for a performance for the community at the Town Center, along with the cheerleaders.”

Former CMU police officer charged with misconduct of office

A former Central Michigan University police officer was charged with misconduct of office for asking two 21-year-old female students to bare their chests during a ride home. Central Michigan Life and The Morning Sun report Jeffrey Card was arraigned Wednesday in Isabella County Trial Court on a felony that could result in up to five years in prison or $10,000 in fines. The incident was in the early morning hours of Sept. 11, when Card was driving the two women home from a bar. He allegedly drove them to a remote dirt road and said if they took breathalizer tests and had blood-alcohol number's higher than a certain limit they would have to expose their chests, CM Life reported.

35-year-old inmate dies in Isabella County Jail

An inmate at the Isabella County jail died early Saturday of as yet unknown causes. Bradford T. Gibson, a 35-year-old male from East Orange, New Jersey, was found unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse at 3 a.m. CPR was not successful. This was about an hour after he was arrested by the Mount Pleasant Police Department for disorderly person, two counts of obstructing and resisting a police officer and aggravated assault on a police officer.

CMU Board of Trustees to discuss new graduate student housing, dining hall renovation

The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees will hear and independent audit report for the 2010-11 fiscal year on Thursday morning. The board meets for its first of two fall semester meetings at 9 a.m. in the President’s Conference Room in the Bovee University Center. Andrew, Hooper & Pavlik auditing and accounting firm will present the report for the fiscal year that ended on June 30.

Reed City Michigan State Police post to consolidate with Mount Pleasant in October

On Oct.16 the Michigan State Police post in Reed City will consolidate with the MSP post in Mount Pleasant as a result of budget cuts. There has been a $17.7 million reduction in the state police budget for the 2012 fiscal year. By combining the posts it will help cut the budget without having to lay-off a single trooper, said Lt. Christopher Stolicker, commander of the Mount Pleasant post. “With these changes there will still be enough troopers on the road,” Stolicker said. “We will now be responsible for four counties; Isabella, Clare, Osceola and Mecosta.”

Mount Pleasant, Reed City state police posts to merge

State police at the Mount Pleasant and Reed City posts plan to consolidate services next month, a media release indicates. The combined departments will serve Clare, Isabella, Mecosta and Osceola counties beginning Oct. 16, the report indicates. As part of the agency’s new regional policing plan, troopers will work from the Mount Pleasant post along with offices in Osceola County’s Reed City and Mecosta County’s Morton Township, officials say.

Dirty Americans perform at Rubble’s Friday, say much has changed since last Mount Pleasant performance

The band returned home to Mount Pleasant for a show at Rubble’s Bar Friday with special guests Wilson, from Detroit. Dirty Americans singer Matt Kozuch, a Midland native and former Central Michigan University student, said there have been many changes since Dirty Americans formed in 2000 and last played in Mount Pleasant. “(Mount Pleasant) was obviously a mad party school for a long, long time and with that came a great music scene,” Kozuch said.

Mt. Pleasant schools could loosen restrictions on mobile devices

The Mt. Pleasant school board will look at loosening up its strict policy against using mobile and wireless devices during the school day at Mt. Pleasant High School. “We're fighting a losing battle,” said high school Principal Jennifer Verleger. “Right now, it's not a respectful situation.” The current school board policy calls for students to turn their phones and mobile devices off from the time they step on school grounds until they leave at the end of the day. But administrators admit that it's a policy that's difficult, if not impossible to enforce.

CMU's Zurlon Tipton to miss most of season with broken foot

If Central Michigan is going to extend its winning streak against Western Michigan on Saturday, it will do so without one of its top players. Sophomore running back Zurlon Tipton will miss Saturday’s game and most, if not all, of the rest of the season due to a broken bone in his foot. “Zurlon broke a bone on the side of his foot. He is actually going to have surgery (today),” CMU coach Dan Enos said of the running back, who was injured during last Saturday’s game with Kentucky.

Chippewas Ranked Ninth in Great Lakes Region

Central Michigan University’s women’s cross-country team is ranked ninth overall in the Great Lakes region. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its regional rankings on Monday. The Chippewas, who were ranked seventh in the preseason release, are ranked third among Mid-American Conference teams in this week’s rankings.

Rep. Cotter, other officials commemorate heroism at local 9/11 event

Mount Pleasant Fire Department Sgt. Rich Clark defines true heroism from his remembrance of emergency workers in New York City on September 11, 2001. “I’m not (a hero),” he said. “These people helped people they didn’t even know that day. They didn’t think of themselves, they thought of others. We can all learn a great deal from these heroes. Always stop and think of how you can help someone else.” Sacred Heart Academy commemorated the tenth anniversary of 9/11 Friday morning, hosting several speakers including Kevin Cotter, R-Mount Pleasant, and members of the Mount Pleasant police and fire departments.

Peter Sturgeon Joins CMU Wrestling Program

The Central Michigan wrestling team has added an NCAA Championships qualifier and two-time Southern Conference runner-up heavyweight to its roster for the 2011-2012 season. Senior Peter Sturgeon, formerly of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, will be eligible to join the Chippewas immediately after being displaced by UNCG’s decision to cut its wrestling program, per NCAA guidelines. He has one season of eligibility remaining.

King Placed in Charge of AD Leadership Program

Central Michigan's Athletics Director Leadership Development Program (ADLDP) was enhanced this semester with the addition of Kevin King to the Chippewas' administrative staff. King, an adjunct faculty member at CMU and assistant professor/director of the sport management program at Madonna University, was hired as director of the ADLDP to carry out its purpose of enhancing character development, social responsibility, leadership and citizenship of CMU student-athletes.

Pledge should be part of school day

State Rep. Kevin Cotter, R-Mount Pleasant, this week submitted a bill to be introduced on Tuesday to give every public school student in Michigan the opportunity to recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day. House Bill 4934 would require public school districts to give every student an opportunity to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and to display a United States flag in every classroom.

Dan Enos likes the depth of his football team. However, the second-year Central Michigan coach didn’t feel great about the depth at linebacker going into last Thursday’s season opener with South Carolina State. So Enos had to consider himself unlucky when all three starting linebackers went down with an injury during the contest.

Longtime Mt. Pleasant broadcaster dies

A longtime Isabella County radio buff and local legend was remembered Tuesday as a master story teller who always had a smile. Jim Hughes, 91, who died Sunday at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility, was a local icon who touched a lot of people during his long and interesting life, Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick said Tuesday.

Two crashes reported in Isabella County

A 22-year-old man was killed early Saturday in an auto crash on Shepherd near Beal in Denver Township, a Flint television station reported. The man was ejected from the vehicle and died, WJRT-TV reported. A 17-year-old passenger wearing a seat belt was not injured, the station said.

CMU president, provost to give State of University Address Wednesday

Ross will deliver the State of the University Address on Wednesday. Provost Gary Shapiro will join the president for the address at 3 p.m. in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium. The auditorium seats 1,226. The address is open to students, faculty, staff and community members. For those who cannot attend, the university is providing a live video stream.

Crash kills one in Isabella County

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal one-car rollover crash that occurred around 3:30 a.m. Saturday on N. Shepherd Road just north of Beal City Road in Denver Township. A 1999 Jeep Wrangler driven by Thomas Gary Painter, 22, Mount Pleasant, was traveling northbound on Shepherd when he lost control, began fishtailing, left the roadway and overturned. Painter was ejected from the Jeep and the vehicle ended up rolling over on him, pinning him underneath it. He died as a result of the crash.

Offense Continues Hot Start in 4-1 Win Over Colonials

Sophomore Juliana Makrinos scored two second-half goals as Central Michigan put on an offensive clinic for the second-straight game, defeating Robert Morris, 4-1, at the CMU Field Hockey Complex Sunday. The Chippewas (2-0) scored six goals in a victory over Saint Louis Friday and continued to display their improved offensive game Sunday, maintaining possession throughout the game while putting pressure on the Colonials' (1-3) defense.
