CMU Stuns Divisional Leader, EMU, 61-46

There was no spoiling senior night for the Central Michigan women's basketball team as they rolled through the Mid-American Conference divisional leader, Eastern Michigan, 61-46 Tuesday night. The Chippewas (16-14, 8-8 MAC) used a 19-2 run over the final 10:06 to snap the Eagles' (21-8, 13-3 MAC) nine-game win streak. "I was very pleased with our performance tonight especially on senior night," said head coach Sue Guevara. "It was good to go out on a win for our seniors Skylar Miller and Sarah Huff. Defensively we are just playing well. The first ten minutes of the game it was really important that we jumped out in front. I thought we ran the floor well, and finished. That is why we got out to the lead that we did."

Harrison man arraigned on mobile meth lab charges

A Harrison man has been arraigned on charges of using a car as a mobile methamphetamine lab. Clare County Magistrate Rick LaBoda this afternoon arraigned Benjamin Q. Bristol, 30, on single counts of operating a methamphetamine lab, operating a meth lab near a school, residence or church, possession of marijuana and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license. The first two counts are 20-year felonies. LaBoda set Bristol's bond at $100,000 or 10 percent. Around 2:10 a.m. today, a Clare County sheriff's deputy noticed the 1998 Plymouth Bristol was driving did not have a working taillight. The deputy pulled over Bristol near the intersection of First and Main streets in Harrison and discovered the meth lab inside the car, Sheriff John S. Wilson has said.

Johnson Snatches Player of the Week Honors

Sophomore Taylor Johnson was named Mid-American Conference West Player of the Week on Monday, her second time being honored this season. The Belding, Mich., native assisted the Chippewas to a 2-0 record last week, with wins over Northern Illinois, 73-50, and Western Michigan, 66-53. She finished the week averaging 17.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds, both well above her season averages of 8.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. She recorded her third double-double on the season against the Huskies with a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also finished the game 6-for-8 from behind the arc to tie her personal best. Against the Broncos, Johnson had 15 points while recording a season-high four steals.

Coming to America: Olivier Mbaigoto makes transition from native country Chad

Most students face some sort of homesickness when getting to Mount Pleasant, but for Olivier Mbaigoto it is extremely different. He is more than 6,000 miles away from his family and friends back in his hometown country of Chad. The 6-foot-7 junior left his old life behind to play basketball in America but says he talks to his loved ones back home “very often.” He now is a starting forward for the Central Michigan basketball team. “The way people live down there (Chad) is a little different than in the U.S.,” Mbaigoto said. Mbaigoto said he misses his family more and more each day. Mbaigoto moved to the United States in 2006 and moved in with a family in Virginia who he said helped him get where he is today.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul riles 1,300-plus crowd at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant

Ron Paul, the congressman from Texas, at times elicited an electric, rock-concert-like response from the 1,300-plus crowd who came to hear him speak at Central Michigan University’s Warriner Hall Saturday. The Texas Congressman’s message of “personal liberty,” controlling government spending, peaceful foreign affairs, auditing the Federal Reserve, repealing the Patriot Act and ending the War on Drugs was received eagerly. The theater held 1,250 seats. The outer aisles were also filled with standing-room only attendees. Hundreds more, who could not fit, listened to Paul’s words via speakers outside the theater. Those who were turned away were given vouchers for seats to see Paul when he visits Michigan State University Monday if they choose to attend.

Life is 'pretty sweet' for Larry the Cable Guy, on his way to Mount Pleasant

A familiar voice booms on the other end of the phone line, with a southern accent so thick you could spread it across a hot slab of cornbread. “It’s Larry,” says Larry the Cable Guy, who’s coming Friday, March 9, to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant. And just like that, memories fly back to the first time he came to Saginaw, at the height of the Blue Collar Comedy mania. “I was a small Asian man back then,” he chuckles, but actually he had talked about a farmboy from Nebraska named Dan Whitney who came up with an alter-ego to help a fellow DJ at a Tampa radio station when his scheduled guest didn’t show up.

Suspect in Mount Pleasant gasoline thefts busted

Mount Pleasant Police arrested a suspect in connection with a gasoline theft Monday. Officers were sent to the Speedway gas station at 201 S. Mission St., where clerks reported a person had pumped more than $40 worth of gasoline into a white SUV and left without paying. With the help of the clerk and another witness, police identified the suspect. Police also learned the same suspect and vehicle were involved in a second theft of gas, this time at the Citgo station at 910 W. Pickard. The theft was caught on video, and officers immediately attempted to locate the suspect so other businesses would not also become victims.
